Nice design pattern for a premium web service - flickr
Like many people I pay for a premium flickr service. The basic service is free but with the premium service you can have hundreds of photos and sets of photos on-line.
When your premium subscription runs out, your service reverts to the basic one. This is a bit alarming since a lot of your photos disappear. But, a simple message and a $24 credit card payment sorts it all out for you and all of your old photos and sets re-appear without incident.
I've always regarded this as a nice way to offer both a free service and a much better premium service that is worth paying for.
